The official launch of the Early Childhood Development Program, implemented through the intervention of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) for the early childhood development of children under the age of 5 belonging to female prison inmates, took place this morning (4th) at the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat. The event was presided over by the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.
Jointly implemented by the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation, the Colombo District Secretariat, the National Secretariat for Early Childhood Development, the Sri Jayawardenepura Divisional Secretariat, and the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat, this program is scheduled to train 15 preschool teachers. As an initial step, an Early Childhood Development Center will be established within the Welikada Prison premises for the children under 5 years of age of the female inmates stationed there.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation, Wijith Rohan Fernando; Commissioner General of Prisons, Prasad Hemantha Kumara; Commissioner of Prisons, S.K. Pallethanne; Colombo Additional District Secretary, Kanchana Gunawardena; Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretary, Sugath Sisira Kumara; alongside early childhood development officers and preschool teachers.
