Greetings of the Deputy Minister of National Integration for the “Eid-Ul-Fitr” Ramazan new year festival
Dear brothers and sisters,
Eid-Ul-Fitr or Ramazan new year is one of the most important religious festivals celebrated by followers of Islam. This is a festival held to mark the end of fasting in the month of Ramazan. Ramazan fasting (Sawm) is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and is considered one of the fifth pillars of Islam. It was during this Ramazan fasting period that the holy book Al-Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammed as a holy message from God to guide the world.
During the month of Ramazan, Muslims fast for almost 30 days from sunrise to sunset. During this Ramazan, Muslim devotees demonstrate their religious devotion and commitment through fasting, prayer and charity. This promotes important qualities such as self-control, discipline, devotion and closeness to God, mental purity, charity, compassion, development of physical health and mutual cooperation. Accordingly, the day of sighting of the new moon after the end of this fasting month of Ramazan is considered as the festival day of Eid (new year of Ramazan). Muslims gather for special prayers that morning, offering thanks to God.
As well, the Ramazan festival season provides a great opportunity to build harmony and understanding among the various religious and cultural communities of our country. This is not only a religious conciliation, but also a time of personal and social reconciliation. It is my belief that the values of coexistence, support and trust will be the basis for the success of our new government’s vision of “A rich country-A beautiful life”.
Similarly, this is the first “Eid-Ul -Fitr” festival celebrated by the Sri Lankan Muslim comrades under the National People’s Power Government, which is dedicated to promoting religious harmony and unity and building peace and conciliation among all nations. Heartfelt greetings to all Islamic devotees around the world who are celebrating the wonderful Ramazan Eid festival.
I wish Eid-Ul-Fitr festival to be a prosperous festival bringing peace, happiness and prosperity to all the people.
Muneer Mulaffer
Deputy Minister of National Integration.
