Reconciliation Related Code of Ethic For Media
Various forms of hostile statements, event broadcasts, or the manner in which they are presented through all electronic and print media are frequently observed. At times, this may occur with commercial motives in mind, or, alternatively, with the aim of undermining efforts for sustainable peace. In some instances, even trivial events are blown out of proportion due to the behavior of these media outlets, which the public in our country has witnessed in recent times. Creating societal divisions and inciting conflicts can not only destabilize the social fabric of Sri Lankan society but also weaken economic stability, thus rendering the efforts to build a stable country ineffective.
Nevertheless, taking steps to prevent these counterproductive actions is both a responsibility and a duty of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation. Furthermore, the necessary authority for this has been granted to the office under directives effective from 01/2024. Accordingly, it is clear that a media code of conduct system is required to ensure national unity, covering all forms of media. This system should not be limited to a mere written code of ethics; rather, it must be actively implemented, continuously monitored, and subject to further revisions as necessary, with strict regulation being crucial.
Therefore, the responsibility for monitoring and regulating this media conduct will lie with the Ministry of Mass Media. However, the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation must take the initiative in drafting the code of conduct/policy framework.
