FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
25 September 2015
The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) has undertaken to formulate comprehensive five-year District Development Plans for each of the Districts of the Northern and Eastern Provinces. This is the first time that extensive consultations with stakeholders have taken place in the planning of Government Development Programmes.
Tentative Plans drawn up by the Department of National Planning and the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation were discussed in every District of the North with the stakeholders. The meetings were Chaired by Mr. Chandrasena Maliyadde, Director General of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation, and the Director General of National Planning with the participation of the Governor’s office, Chief Secretary and other
officials of the Northern Provincial Council, the District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries and other relevant officials of the Districts. Religious Dignitaries, Civil Society leaders, NGO’s, Professionals and Senior Citizens also participated in these discussions.
Meetings were held in September in Vavuniya, Mullativu, Mannar, Killinochchi and Jaffna. Ideas and proposals from the stakeholders in the District will also be included in the final District Development Plan. The District Plans will be presented to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Policy Planning. It is hoped that these will be accepted as the final Development Plans for the North and East, and the same model will be replicated across the country.
