A comprehensive dialogue on District Development Planning for Vavuniya and Mulaithivu districts were held on 8th and 9th of September 2015, facilitated by the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation. The meetings were chaired by Mr Chandrasena Maliyadde, Director General of Office
for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) and were attended by the District Secretary, Chief Secretary of Northern Province, Director General of the Department of National Planning, all officials serving in the District, religious dignitaries, civil society representatives and officers of ONUR.
The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) is chaired by former President Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and operates under the presidential secretariat. The ONUR has initiated to coordinate development plans Districts. The meetings held at the District Secretariats
of Vavuniya and Mulaithivu were the first of the series of meetings of this nature.
The meetings covered areas related to current status of various development projects initiated in the respective districts, highlighting the need for comprehensive development planning, identifying gaps In planning & implementation, discussion on prioritization of projects, identifying urgent needs of the community and the importance of involving all stakeholders in district development planning process. It was also emphasized that development planning is essential in improving the quality of life and socio-economic conditions of those living in peripheral Districts and contribute to national unity and reconciliation. The plans would consider livelihood development, Female-Headed Households, engaging youth and children, and guaranteeing language rights.
The Office for National Unity and Reconciliation will facilitate the finalization of the remaining 06 districts of the North and East in the upcoming weeks with the assistance of the Department of National Planning.
